In competition, you get 15 seconds to look at the cube before starting the timer. It’s free time: whatever you plan there, you don’t have to search for during the solve.

Start with the cross: find the 4 white edges and the order to place them in. Say the moves in your head, without touching the cube.

Once the cross is planned, look for the pieces of the first F2L pair. You’ll track them with your eyes during the cross.

Turn on inspection in the timer settings: a 15-second countdown shows before each solve.

Remember: For the first few days, inspection slows you down. After a week, your cross starts without the slightest hesitation.

Troubleshooting

I can’t plan everything in 15 seconds
Plan only the first 2 edges. Add the third when it gets easy.
I lose track during the cross
Recite the plan under your breath during inspection, then execute it without looking at the other pieces.
