Reading an algorithm

An algorithm is a sequence of moves. Hold the cube without rotating it, yellow on top and green in front: each letter is a face, seen head-on.

RRight: right face up.

Whole cube

On keyboard: the letter does the move, Shift for the reverse direction.

R L U D F BRight, Left, Up, Down, Front, Back: a clockwise quarter turn, as seen looking at that face.
R' (prime)The same quarter turn, counterclockwise.
R2A half turn. Direction doesn’t matter.
r, u, f… (Rw)The face and the middle slice together: two layers.
M E SThe middle slices on their own. M follows L, E follows D, S follows F.
x y zRotates the whole cube, in the direction of R, U and F.
Parentheses don’t change the moves: they group a trigger to memorize as one chunk, like (R U R' U').
Chaining moves
The virtual cube keeps its state: you can scramble, try an algorithm and undo.
